ABS AUSTRALIA APPOINTS SIRE ANALYSTALBURY, AUSTRALIA – March 3, 2008 – ABS Australia has appointed Russell Manton to the position of Sire Analyst. Announcing the appointment ABS Australia General Manager, Steve Fried said Manton, who has worked for ABS since 1995, brings a depth of breed knowledge to this national role that encompasses developing the sires of the future and expanding ABS’ PT program, Cornerstone™. “Russ has the enthusiasm and commitment towards breed improvement that is essential in this role and over the years has gained the respect of breeders and co-workers alike for his proven ability to guide genetic improvement in his clients herds,” Fried said. “Russ has an outstanding knowledge of cow families and proven bulls,” said ABS Dairy Product Manager, Geoff Wood. “He knows and has worked with farmers in all states. He’s well qualified to be out there looking for the next top sires for the industry and making Cornerstone™ a better program.” Manton has toured North America, Europe and Africa to study genetic developments and has a comprehensive knowledge of ABS’ proprietary Genetic Management Systems (GMS). As a GMS evaluator, he has assessed more than 125,000 cows in the past 13 years. Raised on a dairy farm in Stanhope, Victoria, where his family bred registered Holstein and Guernsey cattle, Manton was most recently employed with ABS as a Regional Sales Manager, responsible for the ABS wholesale business in Gippsland, Northern Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. He has also been heavily involved in the company’s product marketing program. In his new role, Manton will be responsible for identifying the best cow families and managing their mating with selected bulls to produce the next generation of sires. He will also manage the sampling of young sires up to graduation and their hand over to the market as proven sires. “He’s really responsible for identifying the bulls that will provide farmers with the characteristics they will need in five years’ time,” said Wood. “He has to be looking to future industry needs.” With Manton’s move to a national role, ABS will combine its western and eastern wholesale regions. Brian Beard, formerly manager of ABS’ Western Wholesale region, will assume full responsibility for the ABS wholesale business as ABS Wholesale Manager. Based in Albury, NSW, ABS Australia is a subsidiary of Genus plc, the largest supplier of bovine genetics and related reproductive products in the world.
