ABS AUSTRALIA AND GGI ANNOUNCE YOUTH AMBASSADOR AWARD WINNER

Albury, NSW -January 24, 2006 -The 2006 ABS Australia – German Genetics International (GGI) Youth Ambassador Award competition was again an exciting event, drawing a large number of entries from across Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia. The competition is conducted during International Dairy Week and this year featured an interview process where applicants were evaluated on their skills and presentation.

Program coordinator Mr. Graeme Gillan, ABS Australia Sire Analyst, was impressed with the quality of applicants and the contribution they are already making to the industry. "The interview process provided us with greater insight into the roles each of these young people are performing in the industry, as well as their future goals" Graeme stated. "It was clear that the efforts many people are doing to promote youth within the dairy industry are working, as each of these young people presented themselves well and will be great assets to the industry moving into the future."

This years' winner was 20 year old Brooke Thamley who is actively involved in the family's Illawarra herd in Lurg, North Eastern Victoria. Brooke is finalizing her studies in an Advanced Diploma of Agriculture; is involved in the improvement and promotion of the family herd and also works as a field officer for Northern Herd Development Co-op. As the winner of the ABS Australia – GGI Youth Ambassador Award, Brooke will spend three weeks in Germany where she will gain first hand experience of the German dairy industry.

"Having the opportunity to view the dairy industry and the genetics used in Germany is very exciting" Brooke said recently, when asked about the greatest opportunities this award provides her. "We use a lot of imported bulls in our breeding program, including European genetics, so having the opportunity to travel and understand the breeding philosophies of other countries is invaluable. "
